Speakers’ Biographies

Hon. Virginia A. Phillips was appointed to the United States District Court for the Central District of California by President Clinton on November 15, 1999, and became Chief Judge in 2016.  She was a Magistrate Judge in the Central District from 1995 until 1999, and served on the California Superior Court for four years before joining the federal bench.  Judge Phillips graduated magna cum laude from the University of California, Riverside and received her law degree from the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall).  After law school she practiced civil litigation with the firm of Best, Best & Krieger in Riverside, California, becoming a partner in 1988.

Judge Phillips served on the Ninth Circuit Jury Trial Improvement Committee from its formation in 2002, and was appointed Chair of the Committee in 2008.  During her tenure on the District Court, she has presided over a wide range of cases, famously including Log Cabin Republicans v. Donald H. Rumsfeld, et al., challenging the “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy for military service by gay and lesbian servicemembers.  She is the co-author of Federal Civil Procedure Before Trial (TRG, 2021).

Hon. Lucy Koh was appointed to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California by President Obama on June 9, 2010.  At the time of her confirmation, she was the first Asian American district judge to serve in the Northern District of California, and the first Korean American district court judge in the United States.  Judge Koh earned a B.A. in social studies from Harvard University in 1990, and continued her studies at Harvard Law School where she completed her law degree in 1993.  She began her legal career as a Women’s Law and Public Policy Fellow for the Committee on the Judiciary of the United States Senate in 1993, after which she joined the United States Department of Justice first in Washington, D.C. and later in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles.  Judge Koh then moved to private practice where she represented technology companies in patent, trade secret, and commercial civil matters as a litigation partner.

Judge Koh was appointed to the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, where she served until her nomination to the U.S. District Court.  Judge Koh has presided over a wide range of cases, including Apple Inc. v. Samsung Electronic Co., Ltd., the first in a series of ongoing lawsuits between the companies regarding the design of smartphones and tablet computers.

Sharoni Finkelstein focuses her practice on the strategic development and implementation of brand protection and enforcement.  Sharoni manages high-volume trademark enforcement programs from initial cease and desist letters through litigation in federal court and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and represents clients in UDRP and DMCA proceedings.  She also counsels clients through all stages of trademark prosecution from domestic and international clearance searches to registration, and manages global trademark portfolios including for multinational companies.

We hope to “see” you there!
